Hold'em : The Bluff

The art of bluffing is one that is very hard to master. Many of the players who think that they are good at it are the worst bluffers. As a starter guide I will recommend thinking about the following points when one is on the way of mastering bluffs. .

  • It would be easier to bluff a tight player than a loose player. Also under this point I would suggest to check if the table is a loose or tight one.
  • Betting structure – The bluffs work better on a no limit or pot limit table. In a limit structure a small price would be called with any medium hand to see your bluff.
  • It might sound strange but it is easier to bluff a strong player compared to a weak player, as weak players tend to be loose.
  • The more people there are in the hand, the harder it would be to bluff. You need to convince more players that your hand is the best.
  • Size of chip stack – players with smaller stacks tends to protect them, so the chance of a successful bluff is greater in this case.
  • Position – a common bluff is the one from a late position. After seeing all the action before you and all you saw was calling to the minimum bet, most of the time it signals medium hands and you can steal and win the pot with a big raise. A similar situation would be after seeing the flop, turn and river. If there was no action it might be that no one has anything and most of the time the first to bet will take the pot.
  • Semi bluff is a very good tool; if you get called you still have some outs to complete a winning hand. In this situation you would see the flush and the straight draws. Also you might consider the two overcards.
  • Your image on the table is important. If your image is that of a tight player then you are less likely to be called on your bluffs. Consider also the opposite. If your image on the table is that of a loose player, betting high with a strong hand has a chance of being called.
